Anthropomorphism as a byproduct
E3 Persona Interpretation
- Mechanism
If agency detection is hair-triggered because false negatives were costly (E24), anthropomorphism is a byproduct of a system that was not designed to draw fursonas. The evolutionary claim is about perception. Persona culture can parasitize that perception: artists build stimuli the system cannot ignore.
A byproduct account of identity would need a further story, for example that self-models reuse the same agent machinery and sometimes tag the self with an animal file. Nobody has shown that. Phylogeny, in Tinbergen's sense, is the weakest layer in this dossier. The honest grade for "this was selected" or "this is a byproduct that explains identity" is E3, and the identity version fails the specificity test: a universal byproduct does not yield a rare identity.
- Sources
Guthrie (1993) and Barrett (2004), as in E24. No genetic study of therian identity was located. None is implied.
- Evidence grade
E3. Interesting, not established, and the wrong tool for the identity question if used alone.
- Counter-evidence and limits
Not every cognitive bias is a Pleistocene souvenir. Some are learned early and local. A byproduct account that cannot be distinguished from a learning account should be labeled as a story. This is that situation.
- Open questions
None at the genetic level until the phenotype is measured in a population. Do the prevalence study first (gaps). Heritability talk before a phenotype is noise.
